After Brexit and Trump: Fight The Rise In Racism

Momentum Hackney is holding a timely meeting to raise awareness about the need to step up opposition to racism, to be held at Abney Public Hall in Stoke Newington London, N16, on Tuesday 17th January 2017 from 19.30 onwards.

Following the referendum result there has been a surge in racist hate crime ranging from verbal abuse against perceived foreigners, to violent attacks on the streets, such as the stabbings of Polish people and an attack on a pregnant Muslim woman that resulted in a miscarriage.

The Conservative government has fanned the flames of racism by attacking immigrants and refugees in order to detract attention from their failing economic policies.

Similarly in the USA, Donald Trump used the oldest trick in the book stirring fear and racism against Mexicans, Muslims and black people. With his election, the danger now is racists across the globe feel emboldened by his victory, and racism and sexism becomes normalised through the most powerful figure in the world.

The shocking death of Jo Cox should be a reminder to all that scapegoating any one community is not the answer. Now is the time to step up our opposition to racism and show “We are far more united than the things that divide us”.
