Disability In the 21st Century: Is the Clock Turning Backwards?

Wednesday 2 December 2015, 17:30-18:30pm, Cambridge

The International Day of Persons with Disability Lecture will be given by political journalist and President-elect of Lucy Cavendish College Jackie Ashley and will explore how modern attitudes need to change so that disabled people can enjoy fulfilled lives.

In many ways there has never been a better time to have a disability because of the advances in technology and science which provide substantial help.  But attitudes to disability are changing.  More disabled people than ever before are experiencing hate crimes. There is a new hostility towards “scroungers” which results in disabled people being targeted.  How do we change attitudes so that disabled people can enjoy fulfilled lives?

Jackie Ashley has been a high-profile political journalist and commentator for ITN, Channel 4 News, the BBC, the New Statesman and the Guardian.  She also sits on a number of boards, including University College London Hospitals’ Biomedical Research Council; Birkbeck College, University of London’s Centre for the Study of Politics; and Women in Sport. She will commence her role as President of Lucy Cavendish College in Autumn 2015.

This event is taking place at: Cormack Room, The University Centre, Granta PI, Cambridge CB2 1SD.
