Working with Gypsies and Travellers – Cultural Awareness Training

1st October 2014, http://www.ccclimited.org.uk/working-with-gypsy-families-1-october-2014.html

Gypsy and Traveller families are often described as ‘hard to reach’ and they miss out on services which are desperately needed. An understanding of Gypsy and Traveller culture can transform the relationship between a service provider and service user, and transform the quality of the service.

Working with Gypsy and Traveller families is CPD accredited and is an ideal opportunity to offer cultural awareness training to staff members who are new to working with Gypsies and Travellers. Leeds Gypsy and Traveller Exchange (Leeds GATE) provides the trainers, at least one of whom will be a community member.

This cultural awareness day focuses on:

  • A brief history of English Gypsies and Irish Travellers
  • Cultural practices
  • Gypsy and Traveller families in the modern world
  • Addressing stereotypes, measures to meet practitioners’ concerns and ways to address the concerns of Gypsies and Travellers
  • Alternative ways to build and keep contact
  • A chance to ask those difficult questions which relate to your own practice
